The Crime Stoppers five-kilometre Walk and Road Race, sponsored by The Argus Group and organised by Swan’s Running Club, will take place this year on Sunday, October 24. Juniors can also enter to complete a shorter 2.5 kilometre course.

The Argus Group has sponsored the Crime Stoppers Walk and Road Race since 2001.

The walk and road race, which is sanctioned by the Bermuda Track and Field Association, begins and ends at the new Argus Building on Wesley Street in Hamilton (please see notes to editors for a general description of the course).

Walkers and junior runners are given a head start at 8:30 a.m. and adult runners commence at 9:00 a.m.

All participants are eligible to win prizes including dinner for two at Bacci and an overnight stay at The Fairmont Southampton or an iPod Shuffle.

The first 400 finishers will receive a free tee-shirt. There are also trophies and prizes for the top three male and female finishers in each of the following categories: Walkers, Youth (8-11 years), Youth (12-15 years), Youth (16-18 years), Open, Master and Senior. This year, there is also a $1,000 prize for the Physical Education teacher with the largest number of entries from their school.

Crime Stoppers Bermuda is a civilian community service that enables anyone with details of criminal activity to report such information, without fear of exposure, by calling its confidential 24/7 hotline 800-TIPS (8477) or logging on to its new website www.crimestoppers.bm.

Rewards of up to $2,000 are offered for information leading to a successful arrest or seizure of illegal drugs or firearms.

Additionally with the financial assistance of several concerned businesses in the community, a reward of up to $100,000 can be made available for information leading to the arrest and conviction of individual(s) who were involved in firearms incidents.

John Drew, Chairman of Crime Stoppers Bermuda, says: “The Board of Directors of Crime Stoppers Bermuda is extremely pleased by the amount of calls and web tips we have received so far this year.

“This has been one of the most successful years in relation to the amount of actionable information passed to Crime Stoppers Bermuda.

“I encourage members of the public to continue utilizing our confidential telephone number 800-7477 (TIPS) or our website, www.crimestoppers.bm to report details.

“Each piece of information received, no matter how small, is one more piece of the jigsaw puzzle that can help Police to secure a conviction.

“Our success in uniting the community against criminals relies on events like this road race to keep Crime Stoppers in the mind of the public.

“We are grateful to the Argus Group for its continued support.”

Gerald Simons, President & Chief Executive Officer of the Argus Group, says: “Crime Stoppers Bermuda is an important community resource that provides the public with the ability to anonymously report criminal activity without fear of retribution.

The Argus Group is a proud supporter of their annual walk and race, which helps to raise awareness of the local charity and allows families and friends to come together on a Sunday morning and get active.”

Entry forms are available from the new Argus Building on Wesley Street, International Sports Shop, Sportseller and Sports ‘R’ Us. Participants can also register online at www.bermudatiming.bm until 5:00 p.m. on Friday, October 22.
