BERMUDA threatened to ban Tory MP Andrew Rosindell after he sparked a row on a goodwill trip to the island paradise.

Mr Rosindell, chair of the all-party group on British overseas territories, accused premier Paula Cox of a “cynical” attitude and told politicians they should fly the Union Flag.

He was denounced by Lt Col David Burch, the country’s former national security minister, who called him “disrespectful” and “out of order” and said he would like to put him on a stoplist so he could not come back.

The Tory tried to shrug off the scathing criticism as mischief-making by politicians who want Britain’s oldest remaining territory to become independent of the UK.

The Romford MP said yesterday: “There was no rumpus apart from one or two people. Speak to anyone there. It was a very good visit.”

Mr Rosindell admitted there were sensitivities over flying the Union Flag when people wanted independence, but said he would go back.

He added: “Look at the Turks and Caicos islands. Now we have to bail them out with hundreds of thousands of pounds.

“That is what happens if you don’t monitor what is going on.”
