Bermuda Hospitals Charitable Trust (BHCT), today announces that Lindo’s Group of Companies has made a donation of $500,000 to the Why it Matters campaign in support of the King Edward VII Memorial (KEMH) Redevelopment Project.

BHCT is an independent non-profit organisation that leads fundraising and charitable giving for the Bermuda Hospitals Board (BHB). It
launched the Why It Matters capital campaign in April 2011 and to date the campaign has already raised over half of its Spring 2014 target as a result of generous pledges made by the local and international business community.

Giorgio Zanol, President of the Lindo’s Group of Companies, says: “Over six years ago when it became apparent that Bermuda needed a new hospital, we decided that it was necessary for Lindo’s to contribute to such a project, which is so vital to our whole community. As a family business we can see the importance of a new hospital for Bermuda’s families and their future grandchildren, the next generation. We
opened a special family savings account and have pledged money each year for this purpose. We are blessed to be working together and to enjoy good health so this is our way of showing our appreciation.

“So here we are today, the hospital project is well underway and it’s very exciting to see the walls going up. We ask for God’s protection of all the construction workers involved and thank the management team for all of their hard work to ensure that Bermuda has a first class hospital. We make this donation in honour of Harry and Marion Lindo, the founders of Lindo’s Group of Companies, and we thank our staff and customers, for without them we would not be here today.  They have all played an integral part in enabling our contribution. Lindo’s is very happy to serve its community in this way.”

Wendy Augustus, Executive Director of BHCT, says: “We are delighted that the Lindo’s family had the foresight to start saving many years ago in order to make such a significant donation to the Why it Matters KEMH redevelopment capital campaign, particularly in this challenging economy. As Lindo’s has identified, this project is one that will benefit each and every member of our island community so there really is no better way for companies and individuals to give back to Bermuda. The plans and design for the new hospital have been aligned to address Bermuda’s specific health issues, so patients will be provided with a more bespoke kind of health care.”

The ultimate goal of the KEMH Redevelopment Project is to improve the quality of hospital care for all residents. The new hospital will provide a better patient experience in a state-of-the art building with green, sustainable elements that has the potential for medical tourism. The plans incorporate 90 single-patient rooms, a new emergency department, diagnostic imaging, ambulatory care services, same-day surgery and dialysis.
