As part of their continuing support of the Bermuda Sloop Foundation, Marsh and Guy Carpenter today made a $25,000 donation. Colleagues have also volunteered to mentor 10 middle school students on four, full-day sailing voyages aboard the Bermuda Sloop Foundation’s training vessel Spirit of Bermuda. The sailing voyages will take place February 9, 10 and 11 and students and volunteers will learn sail training from Spirit of Bermuda crew and will participate in team building and career and life training exercises.

During the voyage, students work alongside their mentors and learn about responsibility, collaboration and other skills that are essential not only for sailing, but for a lifetime of achievements. At the same time, the mentors learn about what interests Bermuda’s youth. Students will also learn about Bermuda’s maritime heritage along the way.

“Sailing is a proven way to build traits such as responsibility, accountability, resilience, self-confidence, teamwork, courage, pride and awareness,” said David Ezekiel, Country Corporate Officer of Marsh & McLennan Companies, Bermuda and Chairman of Marsh’s Bermuda Charity Committee. “Working with a mentor also gives students the opportunity to spend one-on-one time with an adult, learn about their career, why they chose it and the skills required to be successful. The students don’t even realise they are building those very skills through a fun day of sail training. It is an exceptional experience for both the students and our colleagues and we are pleased to be a part of it.”

Diana Martin, Chief Executive Officer, Bermuda Sloop Foundation, says: “What these students learn during one day of sailing, combined with working with a mentor and understanding how the skills they learn on a sailing ship can be applied to their lives at home, school and eventually in a career, can’t be matched in a classroom. This is a dynamic learning opportunity and we are thrilled that Marsh and Guy Carpenter are continuing to support this initiative with the Bermuda Sloop Foundation.”
