Islanders can now cruise Bermuda with ease on whisper quiet, easy-to-operate and environmentally friendly hybrid electric bicycles now being offered at Elbow Beach Cycles. The livery has purchased 40 hybrid electric bicycles, which are available for rent by both visitors to the island and locals. Located on the Elbow Beach Hotel property on South Shore Road in Paget, Elbow Beach Cycles is the only company on the island to rent advanced pedelec hybrid electric bicycles.

“We are thrilled to be able to offer hybrid electric bicycles for rent as they really do offer the best of both worlds,” said Dudley Thomas, Director-At-Large & VP Business Development of Elbow Beach Cycles. “Riders enjoy all the advantages of a regular bicycle including fun, exercise and zero emissions, but when they get
tired or could use help getting up the steep hills in Bermuda, the Freedom bikes provide the extra power needed to make the ride comfortable. In addition to those people who want a fun way to tour the island, these bikes are great for people who are just starting out an exercise programme or those who want to get exercise on the way to the office without working up a sweat .”

Elbow Beach Cycles offers a wide range of rental options for the two hybrid electric bicycle models it carries – the Freedom and the Freedom Sport – for the same price as its traditional pedal bikes, which start at $29 for three hours and go up to $395 per month.

The Freedom line of hybrid electric bicycles operates in various modes. Riders may choose to pedal only, or they may choose the power magnification mode in which the bicycle provides enough power to help the rider pedal more easily no matter how hard he is working, and if the rider is not pedaling at all, the power shuts off to save on battery usage. In this mode, riders can also choose the assistance level – low, medium or high. In addition, there is a power on demand mode in which the bicycles offer a separate throttle that turns on the power and can run the bicycle with no pedaling at all.

“These bikes are meant to be pedaled normally with the motor used as a backup to help out on hills and in headwinds or to just make riding easier overall,” said Mr. Thomas. “The experience is entirely different from riding a gas scooter or motorbike. Here the electric assistance is perfectly smooth and silent, and it complements rather than supplants human power. Plus, by removing the grumble of the engine, it intensifies the rider’s experience in that you can take in the sights and sounds
of this beautiful island.”

Depending on how much power is used, the Freedom bicycles can run for up to 64 kilometres on one charge. Elbow Beach Cycles operates a Run and Replace system in which guests pay a nominal flat fee for unlimited replacement batteries. Every day they can stop by the shop for a recharged battery or customers may also rent extra batteries and charging units for a small fee.

“Our bikes have ultra-high-capacity batteries that last a long time and require very little time to charge,” said Mr. Thomas. “Also, we chose top European supplier, TXED Bikes, because the bikes are intelligent, innovative, energy efficient and environmentally friendly, and they look really good. They are stylish and sleek. All the equipment to power the bike, including the front hub motor, is integrated within the frame of the bike so it’s neat and nothing is exposed.”

In addition to benefits for the rider, hybrid electric bicycles are also easy on the environment. In comparison to taking a car or some other gas-powered vehicle, these human-powered vehicles with electric-assist operate for just pennies of electricity per charge and with no carbon dioxide emissions or other pollutants.

“Purchasing these hybrid electric bicycles is part of a larger green initiative at Elbow Beach Cycles,” said Mr. Thomas. “We are constantly looking for ways to lessen our carbon footprint including implementing paperless billing and invoicing, reducing consumables and transitioning to a data server that runs on clean power.”

Both Freedom hybrid electric bicycle models are unisex. The Freedom hybrid electric bike is designed for leisure riding on varied terrain and the Freedom Sport is more appropriate on road riding. As safety is top priority, all riders who rent bicycles at Elbow Beach Cycles will be provided with a helmet as well as an instruction lesson on operating the cycles.

Rosewood Tucker’s Point® today announces that it has been certified by Green Globe, a world leader in certification of sustainable travel and tourism businesses. Rosewood Tucker’s Point is the only Green Globe member in Bermuda and the first property to receive this prestigious accolade within Rosewood Hotels & Resorts®.

The certification process, which took Rosewood Tucker’s Point a little more than a year to obtain, requires properties to follow a rigorous collection of 337 compliance indicators applied to 41 individual criteria in areas of sustainable management, social/economic, cultural heritage and environmental. Standards range from conserving resources to the incorporation of local culture to employee training regarding their role in the management of environmental, sociocultural, health and safety practices.

“We are proud to have been awarded Green Globe certification,” said Duncan Graham, Managing Director for Rosewood Tucker’s Point. “The Facilities Management Team and Green Team have worked extremely hard to meet the Green Globe certification standards and I would like to thank them for their efforts over the last 14 months. I would particularly like to recognize Kevin Lanthier who spearheaded the resort’s efforts to meet these standards and for his vision in suggesting that we register for this initiative.”

To complete the certification process, members undergo an independent on-site audit to ensure that their sustainability efforts have been thoroughly inspected. Bermudian Denaye Hinds, Director of Sustainability at OBM International and a Green Globe accredited auditor, audited the property in a weeklong visit in October. In late November, Ms. Hinds spent three days scrutinizing the property for every criteria in the Green Globe certification mandate.

However, this is not a one-time certification like many similar accolades. Green Globe membership, which is very rare to achieve, must undergo an audit every year in order to maintain the certification. “You have to continuously improve in order to hold the certification. It keeps companies accountable. In fact, only two hotels in the United States are members,” said Kevin Lanthier, Vice President, Facilities Management at Rosewood Tucker’s Point. “Green Globe holds you to task.”

Mr. Lanthier approached stakeholders in March 2011 and recommended that the resort apply for the Green Globe certification versus other leading accreditations because Green Globe does not have a cap on its ratings. “Other certifications do follow up, but once you reach the highest rating, you can’t go any further,” said Mr. Lanthier. “Green Globe was the way to go.”

Rosewood Tucker’s Point green initiatives include a wastewater treatment plant, solar hot water plant, Sea Water Reverse Osmosis Plant, Thermal Solar Hot Water System (Bermuda’s largest installation to date), and the introduction of solar cars on property.

“Every ounce of discharge water throughout the resort, including over 60 estate homes, goes to the wastewater treatment plant, is reclaimed and diverted to a two million gallon pond that is used to irrigate the golf course,” explained Mr. Lanthier, who has been leading green initiatives on the property since 2006. “Virtually every area of sustainable initiatives that we maintain or pursue meet or exceed the expectations of Green Globe.”

In addition to a Green Team that meets on a regular basis, Rosewood Tucker’s Point trains its staff on a regular basis on how to properly clean a room, what green
products to use and what items to recycle. The property also alerts its guests to its efforts with informational materials in the rooms including tent cards that guests can leave on their beds to have their linens washed every other day. “Our job is to continually educate our guests on our unique environment here in Bermuda and the need to conserve water and energy,” said Mr. Lanthier. “We include our guests in the overall goal of improving the environment.”

As a Green Globe certified member, Rosewood Tucker’s Point will be included on the association’s recently launched sustainable travel website, www.greenglobe.travel. Businesses are displayed in alphabetical order with description, pictures, location and map, contact information and links to booking. Users can also search by property name, country, or category.

The travel website complements its recently introduced Green Globe App for Android mobile devices as well as for Apple iPads, iPhones, and iPods. The App can be
downloaded for free at Google Play (category Travel & Local), at the Apple App Store, and at www.greenglobe.com.

AFL Investments today announces that it is offering companies free financial planning ‘Lunch & Learns’ to be delivered to their employees to help them reach financial independence. The courses are facilitated by wealth managers from AFL Investments.

AFL Investments has developed a number of one-hour education courses that offer general guidance regarding financial and investment planning, which can be offered as a complete series or employers can select particular sessions to be delivered to their employees during their lunch break.

The core seminars on offer are: Financial Planning, Budgeting, Investing 101, Building a Better Portfolio and Retirement Planning. In addition, AFL Investments can also create customised seminars upon request such as ‘Women & Wealth’ to suit the demographics of the company’s workforce.

An example of key topics covered in the financial planning sessions include: understanding your needs and goals, current net worth and cash flow, capital accumulation and growth, asset allocation, contingency planning, estate planning and retirement planning.

Cindy Campbell, Chief Operating Officer of AFL Investments, says: “We have designed these free courses to help employers pass on added value to their employees in this competitive environment where attracting and retaining talent is imperative. Helping employees develop sustainable financial plans is one of the most enduring and valuable benefits a company can provide to its employees.

Cindy Campbell, Chief Operating Officer, AFL Investments

“The seminars are designed to help employees understand the various focus areas that have to be addressed to achieve financial wellness. Employees can undertake planning on their own or one of our qualified financial planners can work individually with a person to create a personal financial road map. Anyone who attends one of our seminars is eligible for a free 30-minute no obligation review session.

“We have already delivered the courses to a number of large employers in Bermuda as part of a test phase and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.”

Financial Planning is a service, not a product, and AFL Investments has a fiduciary responsibility to provide unbiased information and planning strategies. AFL Investments is unique in Bermuda in that it does not require an individual to be an investor with the company in order to arrange for a comprehensive financial plan.

To reduce the administrative burden of offering these courses, AFL Investments will provide and manage customised email invitation and reminders for the sponsoring company. To arrange a course for your company, ask a Human Resources representative to contact Theresa Santos on AFL Investments on 294-5737 or email: tsantos@aflinvestments.bm.

Bermuda CableVision today honoured Jacqueline Browne for her leadership of local charity, St. John Ambulance, which attends to the first aid needs of the Bermuda community at public events, 52 weeks of the year. Its duties include the upcoming Bermuda Day celebrations and Cup Match, as well as emergency situations and national disasters.

Ms. Browne was presented with the latest Bermuda CableVision Community Service Award for her endeavours at a ceremony held at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute this morning. The event was attended by Acting Minister of Health, the Hon. Glenn Blakeney, JP, MP; Minister for Environment, Planning and Infrastructure Strategy, the Hon. Marc Bean, JP, MP; Bermuda CableVision’s senior management team; along with Ms. Browne’s family and friends.

Terry Roberson, General Manager of Bermuda CableVision; Acting Minister of Health, the Hon. Glenn Blakeney, JP, MP; Jacqueline Browne; Minister for Environment, Planning and Infrastructure Strategy, the Hon. Marc Bean, JP, MP

Ms. Browne has served as Executive Director at St. John Ambulance for almost a decade and in her youth was a cadet for the charity, driven by early ambitions of becoming a nurse. As the only full-time member of the team, Ms. Browne is responsible for managing all aspects of the organisation including volunteer recruitment and retention, training, finance, fundraising and youth programmes. Ms. Browne maintains an active dialogue with the St. John Ambulance representatives in its U.K. headquarters and throughout the Caribbean to ensure the Bermuda branch is run to international standards and maintains best practices throughout its operations.

Ms. Browne states her proudest achievement at St. John Ambulance is the successful implementation of a Duty Sector management structure, whereby volunteers have been empowered to form teams with specific responsibilities, such as the maintenance of the charity’s ambulances, and medical supply stocktaking and ordering. Ms. Browne also finds the youth mentoring element of her role fulfilling as she is able to talk to young volunteers and conscripts about their skills development and coaches them into actively addressing their long-term career plans.

Ms. Browne says: “Thank you CableVision for this award. I worry sometimes that St. John Ambulance has been a part of the community for so long that it may be taken for granted so it is helpful to have this opportunity to raise awareness of our needs. The biggest challenge we face is sustaining our volunteer resource as it is cyclical and very few people volunteer beyond a few years. I wholeheartedly recommend St. John Ambulance to anyone interesting in volunteering, as I know from my cadet experience as a teenager that it builds important interpersonal skills such as self-confidence and independence, as well as more specific technical skills.”

Acting Minister of Health, the Hon. Glenn Blakeney, JP, MP, said: “St. John Ambulance has a very important role to play in the provision of volunteer support for our medical and emergency services. Ms. Browne’s influence in making the organisation the success it is today is indisputable and thoroughly deserving of our recognition.”

Minister for Environment, Planning and Infrastructure Strategy, the Hon. Marc Bean, JP, MP, added: “Great leadership and long-term vision is central to the sustainability of our non-profit community that serves the island’s people so well. I am delighted to be here today to applaud Ms. Browne for her excellent service to St. John Ambulance.”

Terry Roberson, General Manager of Bermuda CableVision, comments: “Jacqueline is a prime example of someone that is going above and beyond in her role at one of the island’s oldest charities. Her leadership ensures that this vital service continues to aid people across the community all year round, and particularly in times of need, while inspiring and motivating the next generation of volunteers that work under her.”

As part of the Community Service Award, Bermuda CableVision made a $1,000 donation to St. John Ambulance. As part of the Bermuda Hospitality Institute’s (BHI) Hospitality Trail, the history tour at The Fairmont Hamilton Princess will take place on Tuesday, May 1 at 2pm.

The tour will take participants back to January 1, 1885, when the hotel, fondly referred to as “The Pink Palace,” first opened its doors and began hosting an array of Bermuda’s most fascinating visitors. As the central character of this historical journey, The Fairmont Hamilton Princess not only inspired various novels and movies, but also played a major role in Allied spy efforts during World War II. Following the 45-minute tour, guests will be invited to a mixology demonstration and a
tasting of The Princess Royale, the hotel’s signature cocktail featuring Bacardi Razz, Chambord, lemon juice, white cranberry juice and grenadine.

“Many people are aware of the hotel’s connection with Mark Twain and know that the hotel is named after England’s Princess Louise, but they are fascinated to discover the critical role that Bermuda—and this hotel in particular—played as a spy centre during World War II with more than 1,100 military censors using the
hotel to pour through mail, radio and telegraphic traffic intercepted by the Allies,” said Rehanna Palumbo, Director of Sales & Marketing at The Fairmont Hamilton
Princess. “The hotel is truly a treasure chest filled with stories of the personalities and world events that forever shaped the history of this country and the world.”

As part of the celebration, The Fairmont Hamilton Princess is offering a complimentary Bermuda-themed appetizer with lunch or dinner in Heritage Court or Harley’s Restaurant on Tuesday, May 1 and Thursday, May 3.

“We are so happy to have The Fairmont Hamilton Princess taking part in the Hospitality Trail,” said Karla Lacey, CEO, Bermuda Hospitality Institute. “The hotel’s rich history and iconic status in Bermuda perfectly aligns with this year’s Heritage Month theme, ‘Celebrating Hospitality Through the Ages.’”

The history tour is free and open to the public. Reservations for the tours are not required and participants should meet in the lobby. For more information, call 298-5779.

AFL Investments, in partnership with the Bermuda
Chamber of Commerce, today announces that it is hosting an “Investing in Canada
and Canadian Tax Update” information session. The hour-long session will be
held on Thursday, May 3, 2012 at 12noon.

The seminar is designed for anyone interested in learning more about Canadian dollar
investments and Canadian taxes. It will explore the strengths of this currency,
the current economic conditions and impact of global markets in Canada, as well
as Canadian dollar offshore investment options. The session will also provide a
tax update, looking in particular at how to define ‘resident’ and
‘non-resident’ for tax purposes, the implications of sending children to
Canadian schools, purchasing property and actively investing in Canada as a
non-resident, and retiring in Canada.

The investments section will be presented by Matt Maldoff, CFA, from Cidel Financial Group. Mr.
Maldoff specialises in qualitative and quantitative analysis of fund managers. Matt
has spoken frequently in Bermuda and his engaging style makes complex concepts
easily understood. The tax update will be delivered by Arun (Ernie) Nagratha,
CA, CPA, from Trowbridge Professional Corporation, who has also been
well-received as a speaker at previous AFL Investments events.

Cindy Campbell, Chief Operating Officer, AFL Investments

Cindy Campbell, Chief Operating Officer of AFL Investments, says: “This event is perfect for any Bermuda residents
looking to add or increase currency diversification into their investment
portfolio. The Canadian dollar has performed strongly in recent years due to
the commodity boom making it an interesting option for local investors. The
seminar also provides Bermuda residents with clarification on the tax
implications of capitalising on the investment, education or retirement
opportunities presented by Canada. I am delighted to welcome Matt and Ernie
from Canada and to be working with Bermuda Chamber of Commerce to deliver the
information session.”

The information session will be held in The Argus Training Centre in the new Argus Building at
14 Wesley Street in Hamilton. Interested individuals need to register to attend
by emailing smadeiros-cooke@bcc.bm or calling 295-0331 as space is limited. The event is free to attend for Bermuda
Chamber of Commerce members or $10 for non-members. A light lunch will be
provided.

Inspired by Bermuda’s rich culture, tropical environment and island spirit, the
spa offers a signature array of massage, body treatments, skin care services, aqua therapy, manicures and pedicures.

“We are so excited to introduce Sense spa at Rosewood Tucker’s Point in Bermuda for both locals and visitors,” said
Jennifer Haack, Corporate Director of Spa Development for Rosewood Hotels & Resorts. “Rosewood has been rejuvenating guests at its award-winning spa destinations for over two decades and we’re thrilled to bring Sense spa to Bermuda. Spa travel has become an important part of the tourism industry and we recognise that people have more destination choices than ever before so it’s vital that we remain competitive and incorporating this Sense spa is one way to do it.”

Based on Rosewood’s motto of Sense of Place®, each Sense spa is unique to its location and honours local traditions in healing, as well as incorporates indigenous natural elements into the treatments and décor. For instance, Bermuda honey harvested on property as well as aloe and Match Me If You Can plants from the gardens are used in various treatments. In addition, locker key chains, table displays and presentation trays are made out of Bermuda Cedar and treatment bowls are created with Bermuda blown glass.

“We want our guests to feel a true sense of Bermuda as part of their relaxation and rejuvenation,” said Ms. Haack.

Senator Vince Ingham enjoys a manicure

“It is wonderful to see Rosewood Tucker’s Point investing in our overall tourism product with the Sense spa,” said the Hon. Wayne Furbert, JP, MP, Minister of Business Development & Tourism. “Bermuda is such a special place and has so much to offer. I’m thrilled that the elements and culture of the island have been incorporated into the philosophy of the spa so that tourists and locals alike truly feel the essence of Bermuda during their visits to the resort.”

The new line of products at Sense spa focuses on organic ingredients and the latest technologies in skincare,
anti-aging and rejuvenation. Brands include organic facial and body care by Tata Harper, advanced skin care from Priori Skincare, paraben-free hair care by Oribe and a vegan line of salon care by SpaRitual, while still incorporating some of the spa’s existing brands such as Germaine de Capuccini and vegan polish by Butter of London.

Treatments available include Bermuda Pawpaw Massage, Beekeeper Honey & Cane Sugar Therapy and Organic Care Facial. The spa also has introduced a Bermuda Lillies menu for teens and RoseBuds™ menu for children under 13. In addition, for the serious spa lover, Sense is offering various Spa Journeys lasting from two to five hours. One exciting addition is the Explore Bermuda four-hour Spa Journey in which the guest experiences the relaxing and rejuvenating effects of Bermuda’s botanicals along with locally inspired spa cuisine. The journey begins with a scenic walk through the spa’s garden to the newly revitalized sunken grotto, known as the Coffee Chine where the guest will hand-select the plants to be used in their Match Me If You Can body wrap.

Rosewood Tucker's Point Sense Spa Coffee Chine

“The Coffee Chine is such a special place on this property that has been around since the 1920s but hasn’t been used in many years,” said Ms. Haack. “We often have former guests who stayed at Castle Harbour ask about the Coffee Chine, so we took this opportunity to revive this unique grotto and incorporate it into the new Sense spa.”

Despite the new brand and product offerings, many of the treatments have decreased in price.

“We want to offer our guests a longer, more relaxing spa experience, so we’ve adopted more attractive pricing for many of our 80-minute treatments,” said Ms. Haack. “Also, there still is a perception that Rosewood Tucker’s Point is members only; however, the hotel and Sense spa are very much open to locals so we will be promoting special pricing throughout the year to attract Bermuda residents.”

To give locals a taste of the new Sense spa, there will be an event open to the public on Saturday, April 14 from 6pm to 8pm. Experts will be on hand to provide product and treatment demonstrations while guests enjoy the Sense spa signature beverage, spatinis and tapas as well as a variety of giveaways.
In addition, Ajne Organic Perfumes and Scent Systems will be creating personalised scents for guests while models will be showcasing the new line of lifestyle wear sold in the Spa by ea apparel.

Locals are welcome to visit at any time from April 13 to 15 for a tour of the spa. A 20 per cent discount will be offered on all bookings this weekend and then a 15 per cent
discount through the end of April. For information, please call 298-4030 or e-mail tuckerspoint.spa@rosewoodhotels.com.

AFL Investments today announces that it is hosting a free seminar to help charities in Bermuda stabilise their finances for the future. The seminar will take place on Tuesday, April 17, 12.15-1.30pm, at the Argus Building, 14 Wesley Street in Hamilton.

Entitled “Building a Sustainable Endowment,” the session will explore investment options available to non-profit organisations to assist them in overcoming the existing economic challenges. It will look at how to choose the right vehicles for each charity’s current circumstances, goals and objectives, as well as examining the associated benefits and risks.

The seminar will be presented by AFL Investments Wealth Manager, Elyse Rayner. Ms. Rayner is an experienced investment and financial planning advisor to local businesses, trusts, endowments and private clients. She has expertise across global derivatives, equity and foreign exchange markets and in trading on exchanges in Canada, U.S.A., Europe and Bermuda.

Cindy Campbell, Chief Operating Officer, AFL Investments, says: “Bermuda has a huge charity community for its size and we wanted to support it with this seminar. Many charities are run by volunteers with a passion for the cause, with a part-time treasurer overseeing the day-to-day financial side of things. However, they are often missing a forward-looking financial planner, to help them grow the money in the bank so they can meet their far-reaching aims and objectives. This seminar will give them the tools to help them go the distance by achieving more sustainable financial foundations.”

Elyse Rayner, Wealth Manager, AFL Investments, says: “Some charities tend to operate with a short-term financial outlook, particularly in the current economic environment. They often put any donations, sponsorships or grants they receive to immediate use in order to meet their mission. We want to educate non-profits on how adopting a long-term philosophy is more beneficial. As in personal finance, the right investments can help a charity to preserve and grow its capital base.”

Space is limited, interested charity representatives need to register to attend on or before Friday, April 13, by emailing rsvp@aflinvestments.bm or calling 294-5715. A light lunch will be provided.
