Marsh today announced that it will sponsor a two-year university scholarship worth $15,000 per year to be administered by The Bermuda Foundation for Insurance Studies (BFIS).

While Marsh has donated annually to BFIS since its inception in 1996, this newest scholarship includes a summer employment position for the recipient through which the student will gain valuable hands-on insurance industry experience.

“Marsh is proud to sponsor this scholarship, which will help recipients gain a better understanding of the broking side of the insurance business and the career opportunities it presents,” said Chris Reeves, a Managing Director at Marsh and President and Chief Operating Officer of Bowring Marsh (Bermuda) Ltd.

The scholarship is open to students studying for an undergraduate degree at an accredited university recognized by BFIS. It is available to students who plan to pursue a career in the insurance industry and who major in insurance, risk management, actuarial science, mathematics, finance, economics, accounting, corporate law, or computer science.

Jill Husbands, a Managing Director at Marsh and Head of the Bermuda Office for Marsh IAS, said: “There is a lot of talent in Bermuda and we are grateful that an organisation like BFIS exists to help us in our ongoing strategy to support young Bermudians interested in careers in insurance.”

Gail Martin, BFIS Trustee, said: “I am delighted that Marsh has again renewed its commitment to BFIS and our goal of providing opportunities for
Bermudian students to gain the education and training necessary to work in the insurance sector.”

The scholarship will be awarded to a Bermudian student who exhibits exceptional scholastic aptitude and maintains a 3.0 GPA or above. For more information and to apply, students may visit www.bfis.bm.

The Argus Group today announces the launch of Home Essentials, a new home insurance product designed specifically for Bermuda’s seniors. The new product is available at 25 per cent below the market price for home insurance and has been endorsed by Age Concern as a product that meets the needs of the island’s growing senior population.

Home Essentials provides coverage for a wide range of perils including fire, flood, hurricane, burglary and escape of water. Some benefits that could be considered unnecessary for seniors have been removed, allowing Argus to provide the product at an affordable rate for those aged 65 years or older.

Home Essentials is being launched at a time when Bermuda’s senior population is rapidly growing. The Department of Social Insurance announced in 2011 that approximately 700 residents retired last year, compared to just 276 during the year before. With falling birth rates, people living longer and the “baby boomer” generation preparing to retire, this trend is likely to continue.

John Doherty, Executive Vice President of Property & Casualty, the Argus Group, says: “These are difficult times and no one knows this more than our seniors, the majority of whom are on a fixed income after they retire. We have designed Home Essentials to provide retirees with coverage that responds to the most common causes of loss, while keeping the cost of premiums affordable. We have also made it fast and easy for anyone 65 years or older to qualify, whether their current policy is with Argus or not. At Argus we recognise that this is a growing segment of our population, and it is important that we take care of them.”

The product has been endorsed by Age Concern and as of February 1 of this year, Argus became a certified LINK partner with Age Concern. LINK is Age Concern’s programme to connect seniors to services that meet their needs.

Claudette Fleming, Director of Age Concern, acknowledges that Home Essentials fills a need for affordable insurance for seniors: “It is important for seniors to have insurance, but standard premiums can be expensive and often cover items that don’t apply to the senior population. For seniors concerned about their monthly costs, this new offering will provide peace of mind. And those caring for an ageing relative can also talk to Argus about how Home Essentials can help their loved ones. It is a great new option for seniors.”

Home Essentials will be featured at the Argus display (booths 23 to 25) at the Coldwell Banker Home Show at CedarBridge Academy on Friday, February 17, from 3:00pm until 8:00pm and Saturday, February 18 from 9:30am until 4:30pm. At the show, visitors will have the opportunity to talk to Argus insurance professionals about this new product. Further information is also available by contacting the Argus Customer Service Centre on 298-0888 or by email at insurance@argus.bm.

As a local company, Argus takes its responsibilities to strengthen and add value to the community in which it operates very seriously. We actively support a wide range of charities, local organisations and initiatives, and this single event’s ability to benefit many charities is certainly something we are proud to support.”

At an Expedia Partner Appreciation Event at the Atlantis Hotel in the Bahamas on January 21, Expedia Inc, the largest online travel company in the world, named Coco Reef Top Partner of the Year for Bermuda. While every hotel in Bermuda that Expedia works with was eligible for this award, Coco Reef was given the top honour. The criteria for the award included room night production and growth over last year as well as proactive marketing approaches to the Expedia promotional campaigns.

Director and Owner of Coco Reef, John Jefferis, said: “I am delighted to accept this award on behalf of the hotel. It is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our sales and marketing staff who work with the Expedia team on generating increased sales for the hotel. While the economy remains a great burden on the hospitality industry worldwide, Expedia continues to offer a variety of marketing opportunities and I am grateful that we’ve been able to take advantage of them to generate revenue.”

Trish Korzeniowski, Market Manager, Expedia, says: “We would like to congratulate Coco Reef for its excellence in marketing and for capitalizing on Expedia’s broad reach and comprehensive promotional opportunities to extend its visibility and attract new travellers to the property. It has been a pleasure to work with Coco Reef to help grow bookings.”

Mr. Jefferis, a former President of the Caribbean Hotel Association, added: “Not everyone appreciates the fact that every first class hotel room involves the employment of at least 14 people through employees and product and service providers and that the basis for a successful tourism industry is a healthy and profitable hotel industry.”

In total, 21 awards were given out at the event including Top Hotel of the Year in each of Expedia’s top 10 markets, as well as Top Room Night Producer and Top Overall Partner of the Year.

Lindo’s Group of Companies announces today that it has opened a pharmacy at Lindo’s Family Foods in Warwick. The 144-square-foot pharmacy is part of a larger renovation of the store. Like the pharmacy at its sister store, Lindo’s Market in Devonshire, the pharmacy in Warwick will be managed by Head Pharmacist Stephanie Simons who has practiced pharmacy in Bermuda for almost 20 years.

“The pharmacy at Lindo’s in Devonshire has been doing well over the last eight years and we felt that offering the same service here in Warwick was an obvious next step,” said Zach Moniz, Lindo’s Family Foods Manager. “Having a pharmacy at Lindo’s gives our customers a convenient, one-stop shop experience.”

In addition to prescription fulfillment and counselling, the new pharmacy carries a variety of health and wellness products including over-the-counter medications and vitamins as well as personal care, first aid and beauty items.

In addition to the pharmacy, renovations at Lindo’s Family Foods in Warwick include the replacement of the refrigeration system last year, the
installation of energy efficient lighting and interior design changes such as
new signage and shelving to update the look and feel of the store. The entire
project is expected to be completed by Spring 2012.

“We are always looking for ways to reinvent ourselves,” said Mr. Moniz.
“We diligently try to keep up with customer demands in both the products we
offer and the shopping atmosphere we provide. With this renovation we are
creating a convenient shopping experience in an environment that is warm,
friendly and modern.”

The new pharmacy will be open during regular store hours which are 8am to
7pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 8am to 8pm on Wednesdays, Fridays
and Saturdays. For more information, visit www.lindos.bm.

He is a Breast Radiologist with extensive experience in breast cancer detection. Dr. Green is now available to meet with patients at the Centre, and will be able to provide breast assessment and answer questions from patients who have been recalled or who require diagnostic work following a mammogram so that they have immediate feedback and information.

Dr. Green is responsible for the day-to-day clinical operation of the breast imaging service, and the introduction of standards, protocols and improved breast cancer detection programmes, which will help the Centre to meet international best practice standards for all aspects of its breast imaging programmes. Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre’s mammography services are accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR).

Dr. Green has more than 21 years of experience as a Breast Radiologist and Clinical Director. He specializes in breast imaging, general radiology, ultrasound and uroradiology and has special interest in breast diagnosis, musculoskeletal ultrasound and prostate biopsy. He has reported more than 250,000 breast examinations and has performed more than 10,000 image-guided breast biopsies, lymph node biopsies and wire localizations.

Dr. Green is a member of the Royal College of Radiologists (Breast Group), a UK-based group of Radiologists who have sub-specialist breast training and experience. The Royal College of Radiologists exists to advance the science and practice of clinical radiology. Through its Faculty of Clinical Radiology Professional Support and Standards Board, it undertakes to produce standards or documents to provide guidance to individuals involved in the delivery of radiological services with the aim of defining good practice, advancing practice, and improving services for the benefit of patients.

Dr. Green has acted as an expert breast radiologist witness on behalf of the General Medical Council of UK and was also appointed by the same body as a medical assessor in fitness to practice reviews.

Tara Soares, Executive Director of Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre, says: “We are very privileged to have someone with Dr. Green’s expertise available to our patients. Dr. Green has consistently exceeded UK national standards in cancer detection and has maintained a low recall rate, meaning patients do not endure unnecessary repeat mammograms and biopsies. As Clinical Director of a major breast facility in the UK, he has also gained extensive experience in managing and leading a large screening facility and will be helping us to pursue our goal of achieving international recognized standards and performance. The addition of Dr. Green to our team has an incredible impact on the level of care we can offer to our patients and is another step towards achieving the Centre’s vision of providing
a specialist approach to patient care.”

(Hamilton, Bermuda, January 17, 2012) Local company Alternative Energy Systems (AES) today announces it has been awarded by Gosling’s with the contract to engineer, design, supply and install a photovoltaic (PV) solar energy system to generate electricity at its head office in Hamilton. Gosling’s will be the first commercial customer to finance the project in full through The Bank of N.T. Butterfield & Son Limited (Butterfield).

“This latest project carries great significance,” says AES founder and Chief Executive Officer, Tim Madeiros. “It’s two of Bermuda’s oldest establishments working together to take a modern approach to energy.”

The 136 kilowatt system, which will be installed on the main warehouse roof, will produce over 17,000 kilowatt hours or more than $6,500 worth of electricity per month based on today’s cost of electricity.

“As the price of energy continues to rise along with our awareness for environmental stewardship, we decided that Gosling’s needed to make a move toward renewable energy,” said Nancy Gosling, President and C.E.O. of Gosling Brothers Limited. “In working with Butterfield, we were able to obtain full financing, which was a huge factor in moving forward with the project.”

The monthly payments are lower than the savings in electricity per month, which makes the system cash flow positive from the first month.

Lee Simmons, Vice President, Corporate Banking at Butterfield, said: “Building upon our longstanding relationship, we are pleased that Gosling’s Limited selected Butterfield to provide financing for the installation of a photovoltaic solar energy system at its Hamilton warehouse. We applaud their forward-looking efforts to
reduce their environmental impact and improve their operating efficiency.”

Bob Wilson, Executive Vice President, Corporate Banking, said: “Butterfield is currently the exclusive supplier of financing for AES-installed solar panels, and we look forward to assisting many more customers who wish to take control of their energy costs through the installation of AES systems.”

In addition to the cost savings, the Gosling’s solar energy system will save 3.8 million pounds of CO2 from entering Bermuda’s atmosphere.

“Having just debated the Energy White Paper, I can say that there is strong desire across the board to encourage businesses and individuals in Bermuda to incorporate renewable energy,” said the Hon. Marc Bean, JP, MP, Minister of Environment,
Planning & Infrastructure Strategy. “I commend Gosling’s and Butterfield for not only being a part of important environmental change, but also for inspiring others to do the same.”

Customers interested in learning more about a PV solar energy system should contact Tim Madeiros, Chief Executive Officer of AES, on 505-0804 or tim.madeiros@aes.bm to schedule a site assessment. Following the site assessment, AES will develop a proposal with complete financial and engineering analysis, including the government rebate of up to $5,000, and submit it to the client, along with a Butterfield solar panel financing application, should financing be required. The customer then submits the completed application to the Bank for review. Following the Bank’s approval of the loan, AES will move forward with the project and the funds will be released to AES.

AES, named in 2011 by Bermudian Business as the “One to Watch” for innovation and forward thinking in the solar energy market, manages all aspects of a photovoltaic project in-house to ensure a cost-effective and seamless solution for its clients. In addition to Mr. Madeiros, the AES team is comprised of Project Manager Earl Wescom and Technician Armindo Ferreira.

The funds raised are to benefit the MS Society of Bermuda and were collected through donations and ticket sales for the black tie evening.

The money raised will support the mission of the MS Society of Bermuda in working
with persons with multiple sclerosis (MS) and their families to better understand and cope with the many varied symptoms of the disease. In addition, the organisation strives to increase public awareness and understanding of MS and to assist MS sufferers with medical needs.

“We have thoroughly enjoyed being a sponsor of the Ultimate Bermuda Experience,
which is how this gala came about” said Dudley Thomas, Director, The Ultimate
Bermuda Experience Delivery Consortium and Director-At-Large & VP Business
Development of Elbow Beach Cycles, platinum sponsor of the Ultimate Bermuda
Experience. “Being a part of the fundraising efforts to support the MS Society
of Bermuda is extremely rewarding. Not only have we been able to raise
awareness about the condition and how it affects Bermudians but also we hope
that the funds raised will help those people with MS by providing better access
to the medical care they need.”

MS is a chronic, sometimes disabling, disease that strikes the central nervous system,
which consists of the brain and spinal cord. People with MS can experience anything from cognitive difficulties, visual disturbances and memory loss to fatigue, muscle stiffness and weakness, pain in the arms and legs, and depression. While there is no cure and the condition is extremely difficult to diagnose, there are treatments available to manage the symptoms of MS and slow down its progression. The MS Society of Bermuda works with its members to help pay for the staggering costs of medications that can range anywhere from $1,300 to $5,000 a month.

“We are humbled by the outpouring of support for the MS Society of Bermuda through the Ultimate Bermuda Experience. On behalf of the Society, I would like to thank Phil Keoghan for coming to Bermuda and using his celebrity status to help us
raise awareness about MS,” said President of MS Society of Bermuda, Carolyn
Armstrong.

The Ultimate Bermuda Experience is an adventure race on January 17 in which five lucky couples have won a trip to Bermuda to compete in challenges designed to
showcase Bermuda and its unique culture.

The race will begin at Camden in the Botanical Gardens and will finish in Royal
Naval Dockyard. Local residents are encouraged to cheer on the contestants at
various spots along the race: 7am at Camden for the start, 8am at Albuoy’s Point Park for a challenge and 11am in Dockyard for the finish. Look for contestants in bright blue tshirts riding scooters and hybrid electric bikes. “I trust Bermuda residents will let contestants feel the love as they travel across the Island,” said Mr Thomas.

The 17 organisations were: Bermuda Institute Steel Band; St. George’s Preparatory School Choir; CedarBridge Academy Orchestra; Warwick Academy Jazz Band; United Dance Productions; Precious Melodies; Shine’s School of Music; The Berkeley Institute Dance Ensemble; Troika Dance Group; Bermuda Institute School Choir; Eddie Ming Drum School; Graffiti Dance Crew; Bermuda School of Music Steel Band; Sandys Secondary Middle School Drumline; The Bermuda High School for Girls Orchestra; Bermuda Squad Dance Group; and Sea Breeze Salsa Dancers.

The event was themed “A Celebration of our Children” and was designed to highlight the positive role that young people play in the island’s community and in defining its future, as well as paying homage to the adults that actively raise them to do this.

Each youth group performed live at the event for an audience that included several senior representatives of Bermuda Government. Attendees included: Sir Richard Gozney, KCMG, CVO, Governor of Bermuda and Commander-in-Chief; The Hon. Paula A. Cox, JP, MP, Premier and Minister of Finance; The Hon. Zane DeSilva, JP, MP, Minister of Health; The
Hon. Patrice Minors, JP, MP, Minister of Economy, Trade & Industry; The Hon. Glenn Blakeney, JP, MP, Minister of Youth Affairs & Families; The Hon. Michael Scott, JP, MP, Minister of Government Estates & Information; The Hon. Dame Jennifer Smith, DBE, JP, DHumL, MP, Minister of Education; The Hon. Michael Weeks, JP, MP, Minister of Public Works; The Hon. Wayne Furbert, JP, MP, Minister of Tourism; Senator, the Hon. Kim N. Wilson, JP, Attorney General; and Ms. Grace W. Shelton, U.S. Consul General.

Terry Roberson, General Manager of Bermuda CableVision, says: “We decided this year to recognise these young performers at our ‘Salute to Service’ banquet as they all volunteer many hours to perfecting their skills for the pleasure of others. In addition, we wanted to celebrate the adult leaders that graciously spare their time and energy to cultivate this raw talent. All too often, young people are perceived as a threat to the status quo rather than the positive, progressive force they can be. With this showcase of some of the best emerging talent Bermuda has to offer, we hope to have shattered that misconception by giving our children a platform on which to
delight and inspire.”

Sir Richard Gozney, KCMG, CVO, Governor and Commander-in-Chief, says: “I send my warm congratulations to those honoured at Bermuda CableVision’s seventh annual ‘Salute to Service’ event. The theme, ‘A Celebration of our Children,’ is one that resonates with all of us as the next generation is Bermuda’s most valuable resource. As a nation we should nurture and protect them to the best of our ability. I applaud Bermuda CableVision for its initiative in starting and sustaining this Community Service Award programme.”

The Hon. Paula A. Cox, JP, MP, Premier and Minister of Finance, says: “Young people and their families are the cornerstone of our community. It is most fitting and appropriate to
celebrate them at this seventh annual Bermuda CableVision “Salute to Service” banquet. I am pleased to be a participant.”
