Marine Incidents for April 2010
Wednesday 28th April 8:15pm Bermuda Radio received a 911 call from a member of the public in Flatts who could see a small boat with 2 people onboard in difficulty near Gibbet Island.
Strong winds and rough seas were being experienced and it would soon be dark. The marine police tasked rescue 1 to assist the vessel, Rescue 1 was quickly on scene and able to tow the boat to Flatts for the night.
The boat had been hired and should not have been in such an exposed location during bad weather.
Monday 26th April 4:10pm Bermuda Radio is advised by the USCG in Norfolk, that concern has been raised by family members ashore for the overdue 36 foot sloop "s/v Three Generations" with 1 person onboard, on passage from Hampton VA to Bermuda.
The USCG prepared to launch a C-130 search aircraft while Bermuda Radio commenced Urgent Marine Information Broadcasts for the vessel.
Bermuda Radio acquires a small target on radar approximately 10 miles off the East End of the Island and tasks the departing vessel 'Logos Hope' to this position.
Logos Hope confirms the vessel to be the s/v Three Generations with disabled engine and badly damaged sails. The Pilot Boat St David is tasked to proceed out to assist and tow the vessel safely into St Georges Harbour.
Sunday 25th April 6:15am Bermuda Radio observes on radar that the Bulk Carrier m/v Alice Oldendorf appears disabled approximately 20nm SE Bermuda. Bermuda Radio enquires of the situation with the Vessel on VHF, and they confirm engine repairs have been effected and the vessel proceeds on passage to Sydney, Nova Scotia.
Saturday 24th April 5:04pm RCC Bermuda initiated the emergency airport call out page at the request of the airport Fire Commander to alert emergency personnel to an inbound Boeing 757 aircraft which had reported hydraulic problems. The aircraft landed soon after without incident.
Friday 23rd April 4:50am The S/V Boemia in approximate position 12 nautical miles SW of Gibbs Hill lighthouse, with two persons on board reported their need for a tow into St.George’s harbour due to engine malfunction.
A commercial tow was secured with Bermuda Yacht Services, whose work boat ‘Line One’ rendezvoused with ‘Boemia’ near the Spit Buoy (at the approaches to the Town Cut channel).
At 9:25am ‘Boemia’ was safely anchored in Powder Hole anchorage.
