Devrae Noel-Simmons likely to be UBP candidate for Warwick election

OFFICIAL Opposition United Bermuda Party looks set to announce its challenger for Warwick’s by-election: Devrae Noel-Simmons. ZBM broke the story today… although unconfirmed by the UBP. The seat for Warwick South-Central is vacant following last month’s resignation by former Premier Ewart Brown. It’s a seat Dr. Brown comfortably retained by a margin of five to two in the 2007 election. The PLP has selected former Senator Marc Bean to vie for the seat. UBP Chariman Sen. BERMUDA’S official Opposition is urgently calling on Government to debate and pass the Electoral Boundaries Commission report during the upcoming Parliamentary session. Leading the calls is Opposition Senator Jeanne Atherden, also the UBP’s chairperson. The report, which redraws electoral boundaries across the island to make them more equal, was completed in February. Sen. Atherden points out: “The Speaker tabled the report in the House of Assembly in May and, at the end of June, the Government pledged to debate it before the summer recess – that did not happen. “The...

Opposition doubtful with ‘same tired group’ in new Cabinet

WHILE PLP supports are enthusiastic over the unveiling of the Cabinet under Premier Paula Cox, the official Opposition has doubts. Following the constitution, Governor Sir Richard Gozney officially appointed the 11 members of the Cabinet yesterday at Government House — excluding Premier Cox and Deputy Premier Derrick Burgess. Opposition Leader Kim Swan pledged to work with the Government but criticized it for not bringing about the change that the people need. He said last night: “Bermuda is not working for many today. We see it in spreading joblessness, shrinking paychecks,...
